Advisor BasicsWhether new to Model UN or a UMMUN veteran, teachers and advisors should start here for helpful tips and points to remember as UMMUN approaches. This page is a work in progress! Registration and Country Selection Advisors register students from their school or group as delegations representing countries. To attend UMMUN, a delegation must have at least 6 students, and must represent at least one General Assembly or UN Security Council country. Between 6 and 12 students can represent each assigned country, depending on whether or not students wish to work in double delegations (two students working together to represent one country on a committee). Double delegations are not encouraged and are only allowed on General Assembly committees Advisors should note that registration fills quickly. If you are interested in attending UMMUN, make sure to register as soon as possible after October 5th. When selecting countries, keep in mind that most schools choose from about the same ten countries (US, China, France etc.), while over 90 countries are available at UMMUN. Try to select only the "big" countries that your students are most interested in, and consider suggesting a less-popular nation that will address many of the same issues as the perennial favorite selections. For example, replacing China with Vietnam or Russia with the Ukraine could improve greatly your school's chances of receiving the countries requested. This can also give students a better opportunity to learn about nations and issues outside their usual realm of experience. Logistics Buses are provided to transport students between the Michigan Union and the Holiday Inn on Plymouth Road.
